Saint Christopher in the 16th century

In the first half of the 16th century, Christopher was still depicted everywhere: the terrible period of Saint Christopher was the second half of the 16th century. His devotion was questioned first by the Humanists, then by Luther and the Protestants; finally, by the Catholic Counter-Reformation.

But despite the end of his greatest fortune, the saint continued to be depicted, especially as a protector from the plague, particularly alongside Saint Sebastian and Saint Roch. This occurred especially in peripheral areas and was painted by popular artists.
